The Ultimate Day Trip to Historic Ellicott City, MD: 7 Must-Visit Spots
Nestled along the scenic Patapsco River, Historic Ellicott City, Maryland, is one of the East Coast’s most charming weekend getaways. Known for its 18th-century granite buildings, vibrant arts scene, and independent local shops, this historic town offers an incredible mix of vintage hunting, craft drinks, and delicious eats.
I first visited this historic gem many years ago and immediately fell in love with its timeless character. Recently, I returned for a day trip, and it was truly enchanting to revisit such a charming town. Walking down Main Street again felt like stepping into a cozy storybook—only now with even more incredible local boutiques, cozy book bars, and delicious food spots waiting to be discovered.
Whether you’re planning a weekend road trip from Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania, or Virginia, here is your ultimate itinerary featuring 7 must-visit spots in Ellicott City.
Let’s go on a charming adventure, shall we?
1. Dig for Gems at The Archive Records
Over the past year, I've truly enjoyed diving into vinyl collections, and I love browsing shops whenever I travel. If you're into vintage vibes, start your adventure at The Archive Records on Main Street. This local treasure trove is filled with carefully curated vinyl records, offering everything from classic rock and jazz to indie, hip-hop, and local Maryland artists.
Why Visit: Great turntable setups, knowledgeable staff, and rare vinyl pressings.
Pro Tip: Spend time sifting through their bargain crates; you’re bound to find a forgotten classic or a hidden gem!
2. Sip Artisan Spirits at Ellicott Distilling Co.
Whenever I travel, I love exploring local distilleries. I highly recommend stopping by Ellicott Distilling Co. to enjoy their locally crafted, history-rich spirits. Set in a beautifully restored historic building, this charming craft distillery offers small-batch rums, vodkas, gins, and delightful seasonal liquors.
Why Visit: Hand-crafted craft cocktails and educational tasting flights.
Atmosphere: Exposed brick, warm ambient lighting, and rich local history.
3. Shop Local Boutiques Along Historic Main Street
No trip to Old Ellicott City is complete without wandering through its eclectic Local Boutiques. I always love wandering Main Street since it is lined with independent, woman-owned, and artisan shops offering everything from handmade jewelry and organic skincare to vintage fashion, home decor, and gourmet treats. If you love vintage, this will be your mecca!
Highlights: Unique handcrafted souvenirs you won't find anywhere else, especially if you are looking for Maryland-related souvenirs!
Pro Tip: Wear comfortable walking shoes—Main Street’s picturesque incline has plenty to explore!
4. Capture the Vibe at Studio One Pic
This wasn’t originally on my list of things to do, but it turned out to be such a memorable experience with my friend, whom I took to Ellicott City for the first time! Add some creative visual fun to your day at Studio One Pic. Known for its imaginative photography, fun photo booth experiences, and local artwork, it's a wonderful place to capture your trip with stylish photos or just enjoy some beautiful local art.
Why Visit: Fun memory-making photos, artistic keepsakes, and local creative production.
Pro Tip: Plan your poses ahead of time before taking pictures since you only have a few seconds between shots. You will take 6 photos, and then select 4 to print.
5. Craft Beer & Brick-Oven Pizza at Manor Hill Tavern
Once again, I have to admit I'm a big fan of local beer! I decided to visit this place since I ran out of time to get to the brewery just 15 minutes away. I thought this would be a perfect alternative. Manor Hill is a delightful local beer from Ellicott City. Located in a charming historic building right in the center of town, this lively spot is perfect for catching up with friends while enjoying farm-to-table pub favorites paired with fresh craft beer brewed right here by Manor Hill Brewing.
Must-Try Dishes: They are famous for their wood-fired brick-oven pizzas, soft pretzel bites, and juicy artisan burgers, but I decided to get their Maryland Crab sandwich with an IPA, which hit the spot!
Drink Recommendation: Order a tasting flight of fresh IPAs, lagers, or seasonal farmhouse ales.
6. Indulge in Epic Sweet Treats at The Crazy Mason Milkshake Bar
I honestly thought Manor Hill would be my last stop, but as I was walking to my car, I noticed The Crazy Mason Milkshake Bar and thought, 'Eh, why not?' The Crazy Mason Milkshake Bar offers indulgent, picture-perfect desserts. Served in classic mason jars, these enormous milkshakes are topped with slices of cake, full donuts, cookies, waffles, and whipped cream. If you're feeling adventurous, you might want to try their O’Crab, which features Sea Salt Caramel Chocolate ice cream, chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, red and yellow sprinkles, a Berger Cookie, and a dark chocolate Old Bay-dusted crab, all topped with whipped cream and EC Pops chocolate-coated popcorn. But I decided to get the mint chocolate chip ice cream, and what was awesome about this, besides it was so good, was that they packed it up for me to take home, and it survived the 40-minute drive home! They really know how to take care of their customers!
Why Visit: The ultimate Instagram-worthy dessert experience.
Pro Tip: Share a milkshake with a friend—they are delightfully giant!
7. Unwind at Backwater Books & Bibliopub
I’ve made it a point to stop here for the past couple of years, ever since she first told me about Backwater Books and its cozy Bibliopub idea. This friendly independent bookstore lets you browse a great selection of fiction, non-fiction, and local books while enjoying a glass of wine, craft beer, or a good cup of coffee. They host live music and events, and there are plenty of comfortable spots to sit, read your new book, or get some work done, just like I did. It’s become my favorite bookstore!
Why Visit: The perfect blend of community culture, cozy reading nooks, and evening drinks.
