The Ultimate Guide to Columbia, SC, Best Attractions, Hidden Gems & Local Favorites
As I shared in my blog post “When Travel Takes Over Your Travel Plans,” I only had 24 hours in Columbia, South Carolina, but this delightful city really showed off its warm southern charm! If you’re a solo traveler looking for new adventures, Colombia’s laid-back vibe and vibrant culture make it an ideal spot for foodies, music lovers, and weekend explorers to enjoy.
Let’s go on a southern adventure, shall we?
1. Joint 1710: Local Flavor with Laid-Back Charm
Joint 1710 was my favorite spot in Columbia, mainly because of its live jazz music that kept me coming back, and I’m really glad I did. The food, drinks, and atmosphere were all charming, making it a cozy restaurant that has become a local favorite with its warm vibe, creative specials, and comfort food that’s incredibly tasty. The live jazz performances are fantastic—like I said in 'When Travel Takes Over Your Travel Plans,” not many places truly enchant me, but this one certainly does! The bartenders are very friendly, making an effort to know customers and treat them like friends, which further enhances the welcoming environment.
2. Moxy Hotel Rooftop Bar: Where the Views and Vibes Meet
If you’re seeking Columbia’s top spot to relax, the Moxy Hotel Rooftop Bar truly shines. Recommended by the friendly bartenders at the Joint, this venue offers spectacular city views from above Main Street, creating a modern, welcoming rooftop retreat where city lights meet craft cocktails. The décor is trendy and lively, with neon signs, cozy lounge spaces, and breathtaking skyline views. As evening falls, it becomes Columbia’s lively nightlife center — an ideal place to enjoy signature cocktails, sample local beers, or capture a stunning Instagram shot of the glowing cityscape.
3. Live Music: The Soundtrack of the City
As I moved from the Joint to the Moxy, I noticed live music filling every corner. Music is key to Columbia’s soul — it’s everywhere, powering the city’s vibrant scene with performances on weekends across local venues playing rock, folk, and jazz. From emerging artists to seasoned musicians touring the Southern circuit, Columbia’s lively scene offers something for everyone. Nothing beats having a drink, discovering a new band, and letting the city’s rhythm lead to a memorable night, just as it did for me.
4. The Soda City Market: Saturday Morning Must-Do
A trip to Columbia wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the lively Soda City Market, which takes place every Saturday morning on Main Street. This charming outdoor market truly captures the city’s vibrant community spirit! Local farmers, artisans, and food vendors line the street, offering everything from fresh produce and homemade pastries to handcrafted jewelry and beautiful artwork. I even found the perfect Christmas hat, custom-made! Whether you're craving a gourmet coffee, want to explore unique local crafts, or pick up a fresh bouquet of flowers, all while enjoying live performances along the sidewalks— this spot is ideal, especially for solo travelers.
5. Exploring Congaree National Park: Nature’s Hidden Wonder
If you're looking to escape the city and immerse yourself in nature, Congaree National Park is just a 30-minute drive from downtown Columbia. As South Carolina's only national park, it boasts some of North America’s tallest deciduous trees. Visitors can stroll along the 2.4-mile Boardwalk Loop Trail, which winds through ancient forests and tranquil wetlands. I was fortunate to see a gator in the lake! For adventure lovers, kayaking or canoeing on Cedar Creek offers chances to spot wildlife like deer, otters, and various bird species. In summer, the park’s synchronized fireflies light up the forest, creating an extraordinary natural display I hope to see again. Whether you’re into hiking, photography, or simply enjoying nature, Congaree offers a peaceful retreat that complements Columbia’s lively energy, and I felt completely safe exploring it alone.
