3 Best Places to Eat and Drink in Charleston, South Carolina

For years, I've heard wonderful things about Charleston, South Carolina. It's been celebrated as one of the most charming and flavorful cities in the South, and I can truly see its colorful charm! I was so happy to take a 24-hour getaway during my work trip to explore it. With its quaint cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and lively food scene, Charleston continues to welcome visitors eager to enjoy unforgettable cuisine, tasty cocktails, and the warm hospitality that Southern charm offers with elegance.

Let’s go on a Charleston adventure, shall we?

Henry's On The Market

Henry’s isn’t just a restaurant... it’s truly an experience! Since opening in 1932, it proudly holds the title of being the oldest continuously operating restaurant. Known for its lively and warm atmosphere, Henry’s hosts live music across its charming multi-level spaces, including an energetic rooftop terrace and performances most nights. It’s definitely one of downtown Charleston’s favorite spots to relax and hang out with friends. Each level offers different kinds of live music, from country to soulful indie — just like the vibrant music scene in Columbia, South Carolina! I recommend arriving early because, when I first got there, it was nice and relaxed, but within about 20 minutes, a line stretched two blocks long! It’s also a wonderful place for solo travelers, as you’re likely to meet lots of friendly faces. I even ended up spending part of the evening chatting with two lovely girls. Overall, this spot is a must-visit! Probably my favorite place of my trip!

Church and Union Charleston

If you’re looking for a fancy dining spot with a fun twist, Church and Union is just the place. Situated inside a charming old church on Market Street, this restaurant transforms sacred architecture into a memorable meal experience. With its soaring ceilings, beautiful stained-glass windows, and biblical passages hand-painted across the ceiling, the dining room alone makes it worth a visit. And the food? Absolutely delicious! I really recommend trying their handmade braided ravioli — it's the best I've ever had, and the sauce was perfect! This is a place you'll definitely want to check out just for the unique atmosphere and fantastic food! And this is right across the street from the next place you should visit….

Pavilion Bar

I'm really glad I followed a recommendation from someone at my hotel to visit this place, especially since it’s right across from Church and Union. I visited just before sunset, which made for a perfect ending to my Charleston evening before heading over to Henry's. The Pavilion Bar, perched high above the city at the Market Pavilion Hotel, offers stunning views and a relaxed atmosphere. This rooftop lounge truly captures the spirit of Charleston—warm coastal breezes, beautiful waterfront scenery, watching ships come into port, and stylish cocktails that make you feel like you're on vacation.

Final Thoughts

One small thing about Charleston is that I wish I had more time to explore! From its stunning, colorful architecture to its warm Southern manners, Charleston provides experiences that blend history, creativity, and community beautifully. It's such a welcoming place to wander around, whether you're traveling solo or hoping to meet new friends. You definitely should make this a must-visit destination!
